Despite the noticeable increase in returns at the Egyptian box offices during the current season compared to those in the past years, the lion’s share went to the owners of the movie theaters, while the producers’ portion of the profits has shrinked, according to the Arabic daily Al Raya.
The reason behind that is simply the large number of films competing on this summer pie which is still, anyway, one pie, said the paper.
The revenues from the films screened this season have reached more than EP40 million.
Mohammed Heneidi’s film Jaana Al Bayan Al Tali (we have received the following communiqué) topped the Egyptian box office returns for five weeks of showing, raking in 14 million pounds.
Ahmed Zaki’s Ayyam Al Sadat (Sadat’s days) opened in second place, with expected earnings of 12 million pound for ten weeks of showing, followed by Ahmed Al Saqqa’s film Africano with 8 million for eight weeks.
Alaa Walei Eddin’s film Ibn Ezz (son of a wealthy family), which was expected to be the major rival for Heneidi’s, has disappointed its makers, with unexpected earnings of 5 million pound for six weeks of showing – Albawaba.com
