Film director Mohammed Khan has applied indirectly to obtain Egyptian citizenship, according to the UAE daily Al Bayan.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak awarded Khan the Nile Medallion in recognition of his role in Ayyam Al Sadat (Sadat Days), scripted by Ahmed Bahjat and costarring Ahmed Zaki.
The Pakistani nationality of Khan was about to deprive him of representing Egypt at a film festival, but the defense of critics and academics saved the situation.
Mohammed Khan was born in Egypt in 1942 to a Pakistani father and an Egyptian mother.
He earned his diploma in film technique from London College and returned to Cairo to work for the Cairo Company for Film Production. Then he returned to London and stayed there 1970-1978 practicing film criticism. He issued his first book in English on the Egyptian cinema history.
Khan’s first film was Darbet Shams (Sunstroke) in 1980.
