During a meeting with Jordan's foreign minister Nasser Judeh, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini cut short a joint press conference after becoming emotional when discussing Tuesday's explosions in Brussels, which have so far killed at least 26.

"It is... a very sad day for Europe as Europe and its capital is suffering the same pain that this region has known and knows every single day," Mogherini said tearfully.

Mogherini added that it was already clear that the attacks on Brussels' airport and metro station were the result of radicalization, and called on European and Middle Eastern leaders to unite against militant attacks.

"We are still waiting for more precise news on the dynamics of the attacks in Brussels but it is quite clear the roots of the pain we are suffering around our region are very much the same," she said.

"Being here together is the most powerful message of strength and friendship among our people that we can pass to those who would like to divide us."

At least 26 have been killed and dozens more wounded in explosions that struck the Belgian and European Union capital Tuesday morning. The blasts came just days after the dramatic arrest of Salah Abdeslam, a key suspect in Novermber's attacks on Paris that left 130 dead.
