Eight people, including two children were killed in early morning clashes between anti-government militants and security forces in Fallujah, Friday.

Fighting erupted around 3am and lasted for several hours, according to a tribal leader in the city. Nine others were also injured in the violence, AFP reports.

Iraq’s government has been unable to control parts of Fallujah along with neighboring Anbar province in the country’s civil war.

Over 400,000 Iraqis have been displaced in Anbar when militants clashed with government forces backed by local tribal leaders since December 2013.

Iraq’s future remains uncertain as the presidential election passed April 30 and American troops withdrew from the country in 2011.
