Canadian Specialist Hospital (CSH), one of the largest private hospitals in Dubai catering to the tertiary health care needs of the Middle East, is offering a special medical check up package for diabetic and hypertensive patients at its Deira branch during the holy month of Ramadan.

The exclusive package is valid throughout the month of Ramadan from 9 am to 1 pm, and includes:

Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar Check

Consultation with the Clinical Nutritionist

Guidance on maintenance of regular medication while fasting

“Fasting may have an adverse physiological impact on those suffering from diseases affecting the cardiovascular system, kidneys, stomach and intestines. Although fasting is possible in many of these circumstances, it may sometimes not be tolerable physiologically, particularly for older patients. As it turns out, these may be the very patients who are most adamant that they wish to perform their fast. Before and during Ramadan, it is imperative that chronic patients undergo a medical assessment. It is also essential for them to speak to a doctor who can prepare them for the fast, highlighting the importance monitoring of your disease, adjustments in medication, and other crucial information,” said Dr. Ahmed Gabroun, Specialist Cardiologist at Canadian Specialist Hospital.

According to Dr. Gabroun, some of the key issues that also need to be addressed during the holy month are managing the intake of food and drinks, ensuring sufficient hydration, and maintaining healthy eating habits despite the drastic change of Ramadan meal timings.

“Food and water intake in such cases needs to be carefully planned, and special attention should be given to the size of meals. Drinking sufficient water and juices between Iftar and sleep is important to avoid dehydration and for detoxification of the digestive system, but the intake of large amounts of caffeinated beverages and fatty foods should be avoided. Generally speaking, those whose conditions are relatively under control may fast with very few lifestyle alterations”, added Dr. Gabroun.
