The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has launched a four-year plan to carry out major infrastructure projects in the electricity and water sector, with an allocation amounting to QR5.8 billion (about US$1.60 billion).
Details of the plan for 2005-2009 were outlined by senior officials of Kahramaa at a news conference held recently at Intercontinental Hotel.
Kahramaa Vice-Chairman Essa Shaheen Al Ghanem, speaking on the occasion said 55 new electricity stations and several projects to develop water distribution networks will be set around the country by 2009.
Al Ghanem said that the capacity of electricity sub-stations would be boosted by 60 per cent in the next few years compared to the existing ones.

As for the water sector, a total of QR1.57 billion has been allocated, of which QR1.15 billion earmarked for projects currently being undertaken, which cover the 88km Ras Laffan B pipeline to carry potable water to areas such as Bani Hajjar, Gharafa, Duhail and Salwa Industrial Area.
